WHAT/HOW/WHO

Chart 004
December 9, 1999

Project/artist name, title, reference, label, distribution (area).

01 Nine Inch Nails, The Great Below, from The Fragile CD (Nothing)/Interscope
- from the critically acclaimed third album, I chose this track for its beautiful simplicity and yet its subtile arrangement (this weird synth melody caressing the voice just above that huge bass sound). Reznor shows there his unique approach to litterature, 'cause that is the word here, and how a few notes can be so touchy.
02 Surgeon, Black Jackal Throwbacks, from Force and Form, Tresor 117 CD (Tresor)
- one of the best techno moments of this period, nothing describes this track better than the title of the album. Rich textures, evolving around square danceable beats, there is still new forms in dark dance music. Post modern.
03 The Angels of Light, New Mother, FR 003 CD, Young God Records
- ex Swans leader Michael Gira comes back with this full length opus. This is much lighter pop music than its precedent outputs. He only retained his dark approach to lyrics with a very strange poetry, a mixture of pleasure and pain, and brings totally new ways to his music writing, introducing a whole range of acoustic instruments. A very penetrating album indeed. Pop body music.
04 King Crimson, The Court of The Krimson King, from In the Court of the Krimson King, 1999 remastered version, Virgin
- time to re-discover this psychedelic classic on a beautifully remastered album. Some guitars in there you couldn't catch then. Worth it.
05 Diamanda Galas, Iron Lady, from Malediction and Prayer (Live), CD STUMM 163, (Mute)
- on your knees and praise for the Queen of sulphurous piano tales. What will it be if Nick Cave will join her there?
