a meat reality effort ............... by Pierre de Kerangal
Flyvision Expo 97 is the first physically staged presentation of a selection of Web-specific projects featured on Flyvision.
Pierre Nouvion and I had talked about my art activities on the World Wide Web many times. He knew that after working as a 3D animator doing TV commercials I had decided to go back to fine arts and work exclusively on what I call "World Wide Web-specific art" but we had never had the opportunity to actually sit in front of a computer together. One night of August 1996, it finally happened.
I showed him the way around PALIMPSEST clicking rapidly through the projects presented at that time. Like every year during the summer Andrei and I were working on Jet Log and I was anxious to get to that part. Suddenly he shouted something he had been saying with a normal tone of voice for a few minutes. I stopped my passionate monolog. Then he told me to leave him and my laptop alone.
I was so used to throwing my I-tell-you-everything-about-what-I-do-in-five-minutes speech that I had forgotten I was talking to a gallery owner who actually experiences the works he decides to show with the mind of the art collector before listening to it with the pointy ears of the cash register.
When he came out of the techno chamber his verdict was clear and simple. "You don't have the right to hide this from what you call meat reality."
Shortly after, the date of Flyvision Expo 97 was set.
