Lunch at Le Plongeoir.

- Could we have a table in the shade for lunch?
- Oh! This will be difficult... Although right here.

Here is a typical example of a French response.

If you ask something unusual,
such as a table in the shade at the beach,
you are very likely to get a negative answer first.

Before even trying to understand the question
the French brain understands that it is an unusual question.
Most of the time there is absolutely no panic
but the first answer is just "no."

Sometimes you have to ask the question a second time
suggesting the answer you would like to hear.

Today's case was not too bad considering that the answer expected
came in the second part of the answer.
The second question was not needed.

In this case "right here" was just in front of him!

By the way Le Plongeoir is the most surprising and interesting
place to have lunch or get a sunburn in Nice.
It is just east of the port and will not stay there long
as the port of Nice will be extended soon.
